Description d¢emploi
Casting is a manufacturing method by which, molten metal is poured into a mould cavity that has a certain shape; upon solidification, the metal adopts the shape of the mould. It is one of the oldest methods to obtain parts with the desired shape from materials that can melt and consequently, it has been deeply studied. Nevertheless, the casting process of a novel alloy is always challenging and requires a deep understanding of the parameters affecting the casting phenomenon of a specific alloy. This thesis project aims at optimizing the sand casting process at the industrial scale of a novel steel developed to be abrasion and corrosion-resistant.
Specific objectives for the PhD candidate:
- Assist the scaling-up (from lab scale to industry) of the novel alloy
- Optimization by DOE of the different parameters influencing the casting process
- Characterization of the microstructure, composition and type of phases of the as-cast material
- Evaluation of the mechanical properties
